Let’s talk about Vitamin C serum. If you’re new to serums, Vitamin C is a powerhouse and the one I always recommend first to friends. While serums can seem overwhelming, Vitamin C stands out for its multiple benefits. It’s especially effective for hyperpigmentation and acne spots. As someone who is very susceptible to hyperpigmentation from even a few minutes in the sun, Vitamin C helps keep those spots in check and fades them over time.

Even if you don’t struggle with pigmentation, Vitamin C is still essential. It hydrates, boosts collagen production, reduces wrinkles, shields against UV damage, combats free radicals, and soothes inflammation. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a Vitamin C serum:

  • Concentration Matters: Most serums contain between 10% and 20% Vitamin C. Higher concentrations often yield more noticeable results, but if you have sensitive skin, starting with a 10% concentration can help minimize the risk of irritation.

  • Stability and Packaging: Vitamin C is known for being unstable and can break down when exposed to light and air. To ensure effectiveness, choose serums with stable formulations and packaging, such as dark glass bottles or air-tight pumps.

  • Complementary Ingredients: Vitamin C can provide additional skin benefits when paired with other ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, Ferulic Acid, and Retinol. These can be included in the Vitamin C serum itself or in other products used during your skincare routine.

  • Application Tips: Apply Vitamin C in the morning to clean, dry skin. It’s best used after cleansing and before applying moisturizer and sunscreen.

Here are my current favorites:

Pai Skincare Fade Forward Dark Spot Remover Designed for sensitive skin 🙋‍♀️, this serum is a great starting point. It includes Vitamin E, Hyaluronic Acid, and Marine Algae to enhance effectiveness.

Youth to the People 15% Vitamin C + Energy Serum This serum feels amazing on your skin and is incredibly refreshing! It contains caffeine from Yerba Mate, which helps reduce morning puffiness, and squalene to keep your skin hydrated and soft.

Drunk Elephant C-Firma This was the first Vitamin C serum I tried, and it helped me fall in love with the results. It includes Ferulic Acid for its antioxidant benefits and stability. When you purchase, you’ll need to mix the product yourself, ensuring you always start with the freshest product.
